Camp Care-A-Lot Mission Statement
Camp Care-A-Lot is a one week residential summer camp for the economically and culturally disadvantaged youth of Springfield, Jacksonville & the Central Illinois area. Our organization’s members believe residential camping programs for this population can effectively counteract violent, destructive and antisocial influences (which are all too prevalent in their day-to-day lives) by exposing campers to life experiences and tasks which promote understanding, generosity, empathy, commitment & team work. Eleven sessions of experience has convinced us of both the relevance of such goals and the immediate and long-term benefits of this program for its participants.

President's Ponderings
This is your bi-annual greeting from me. I have made some observations concerning our 7th summer of Camp Care-A-Lot in Springfield and our 4th in Jacksonville regarding the counselors, volunteers, children we are serving, and Camp, from the eyes of someone who has seen this project grow into a wonderful experience for children from low or no income families from Central Illinois. I am truly impressed with the counselors/ volunteers who have supported us this year and in past camping sessions. We’ve been fortunate to associate with those individuals who have a genuine interest in our children and what we are trying to accomplish. We will always be looking for additional people with those same interests. We’ve had a great core group of volunteers who continue to make Camp one of their summer priorities. As time goes on, we find ourselves in a position that more children could attend Camp if we could find qualified volunteer counselors who are willing to make the one week commitment. I am sentimental when I see individuals who have been with us for years and how their lives have changed. Volunteers who started with us as high school students are now accepting their first teaching assignments, getting married, starting their own families, have children of their own starting high school or college, starting their own businesses, and unfortunately, some are moving away.

We are extremely grateful for the impact the Firefighters have made. Springfield Firefighters have provided a board member, 2 full time counselors and 3-4 firefighters during each day to volunteer as aids in caring for our children. The Firefighters in Jacksonville have provided a full time counselor and several daily or evening volunteers. All the firefighters are quality individuals who children can look up to as the role model missing in their lives. Both Unions bring their fire trucks to camp and discuss fire safety with campers. We are very fortunate to have their continued support.

I am the first to realize that giving up an entire week to spend with 6-10 year old children may not be your idea of a vacation, but how about one afternoon or evening? Maybe, there is a special project that will need some additional supervision or a talent you may be able to teach the children. There are many ways you can assist and you are greatly needed. We just ask you contact us and we’ll talk about the possibilities. I wish everyone a wonderful upcoming holiday season and may it bring all the joy and happiness every family should experience throughout the entire year.

Regards,
Gary Hills,
Board President
